Stone Island Allegedly Buying Stake in Soccer Club
Stone Island is certainly known for its rugged sportswear aesthetic, but now the luxury Italian brand is looking to forge a more formal connection with sports. According to Italian media, the label is considering purchasing shares in the soccer club Modena F.C.
The rumored purchase would give Stone Island 30% of the Modena team, which currently plays in Italy’s Serie C, or third-tier league. The club represents the same region of Italy where Stone Island originated. Stone Island’s parent company, Sportswear Company, currently denies the rumors. However, the Italian press says an announcement likely wouldn’t take place until March 5, when minority shareholders would be released from their stake in the club.
Stone Island recently released a new collection under its Shadow Project label, showcasing a selection of nylon pieces with bold textures and colors. Its most recent main line collection for Spring/Summer 2020 showcased colorful camo prints.
A stake in a soccer team might indicate Stone Island is looking to show its apparel on the field. It is certainly not the first fashion brand to take a bigger interest in soccer, as numerous brands have announced collaborations with European clubs in recent months. Fellow Italian label Palm Angels also recently teased a collaboration with football club Inter Milan. Last year saw the launch of the much-buzzed about Juventus x Palace x adidas Football Collection, while Paris Saint-Germain and Jordan Brand released a capsule collection this past January.
